Reiki

Reiki is an ancient Japanese therapy for stress reduction and relaxation.  It is thought to also promote healing of the mind and body.  There are many different styles of Reiki treatment, our Therapist is trained using the technique developed by Mikao Usui in 1922.  He believed that life force energy had the power to heal by unblocking the energy channels flowing through the body (very similar to the energy channels in reflexology).  Once the energy was flowing freely again, his patients ailments were notably improved.

Reiki is a natural, treatment which most people can benefit from.  The Therapist channels energy through their hands into the individual receiving the treatment, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.  The energy also stimulates and unblocks the energy channels throughout the body which can help with  rebalancing mind, body and spirit.  You do not have to believe in the power of life force energy to benefit from the relaxing effects of Reiki, many of our clients do not but all agree that it is a very relaxing treatment!  The treatments can be done without any areas of the body being physically touched by the therapist or hands can be laid on.  This will be discussed prior to the treatment commencing.

Our treatments typically last from 30-60 minutes (depending on the clients needs and requirements) and can also be tailored to concentrate on specific areas if required.  The length of the treatments can also be extended further if necessary, please let us know at the time of booking.

The initial treatment period will include an assessment to ensure that the treatment is suitable for the client and to make sure any health issues are outlined to the therapist.  In a few cases this treatment will not be suitable for a client, those with pacemakers, epilepsy and severe mental health problems will not be able to have a Reiki treatment because it can cause problems for their health.  Others, such as those suffering from severe Diabetes or severe Depression, may need to have permission from their G.P.  before the treatment can be carried out.  Many people, however, will be able to have this wonderful treatment with no problems.  Young children are not suitable clients for prolonged Reiki treatment due to the intensity of energy flowing through the body at times and teenage children or vulnerable clients can have a shorter treatment but there does need to be a parent or guardian with them during the treatment.

As Reiki promotes relaxation it is excellent for treating clients with anxiety, mild to moderate depression, stress and mood swings.  It can also allow the mind to relax sufficiently that the body can also benefit.  Although there is no scientific data to show that Reiki can improve physical conditions, it has started to be used in addition to conventional medical treatments to improve physical conditions.

The environment where the treatment is to take place is quite important.  There needs to be room for a Therapists couch (but treatments can be carried out on a bed or in a chair, especially if lying down is an issue for the client), room for the therapist to move around the client easily during the treatment and no noise or distractions (e.g. people coming in and out of the treatment area or phones beeping regularly) for the treatment to be effective.  There is no need to remove any clothing except for footwear, unless a piece of clothing is tight and uncomfortable, and oils are not used.  During the treatment the client lays on his/her back (or another position which they find comfortable) and is not expected to do anything else except to close their eyes and drift off!  The Therapist will work around the body, treating either selected areas or the whole body (depending on the treatment planned).

After treatment there is a short recovery period, many people are quite disorientated when the treatment has first finished, where aftercare is discussed fully.

If you have any further questions about the therapy or your suitability please get in touch with us prior to booking for a chat.
